Prose Version
At dawn, as the starlight faded, Jamasp ordered the army down onto the plain; drums beat upon the elephants and the host set out toward the field of war. Watchmen were dispatched in every direction, as befits freeborn men, and a rider came to the king with word that an unmatched force from Turk and Chin had drawn near, pitching tents across mountain, valley, and plain. Brave Goshtasp summoned Farrokh Zariir as commander, entrusted the standard to him, and bade him array the elephants and the ranks. A chosen wing of fifty thousand riders was given to Esfandiyar; another division was set with lion-hearted champions, and around the honored captain—lion of the world and peer to the king—the troops were encircled. The rear of the army was placed under Bostur, the guiding light of the warlord of royal lineage, while the king himself sat upon a shining throne atop the mountain to oversee the muster. On the other side, Arjasp, lord of Chin, likewise drew up his forces: he detached thirty thousand battle-tested Khalkh soldiers and sent them toward the great standard and resounding drums; one division he entrusted to Kahram, a raging lion, and another to Gorg-sar with a hundred thousand chosen riders. He ordered the center well, and with hundreds of thousands of seasoned horsemen guarded the rear—setting his distinguished son, Kahram, as commander over that heavy host.
