بخش 27
Prose Version
Arjāsp commands Kahram, his chief’s son, to choose a thousand worthy riders from the Turanians and ride to Balkh, to strike the fire-worshipers and the fiends, behead their leaders and burn their halls; if he can shackle Esfandiyār, to sever his head and make the world resound with his fame. Kahram accepts and, when the sun draws its blade and night’s army melts away, he brings the Turanian host and raids the border, and as they near Balkh, they assail the fire-worshipers with bitter speech and steel. Lohrāsp, the aged king, on hearing of Kahram’s approach, seeks refuge in God, asking strength for faith and life; there is no champion in Balkh, no mace-bearer, so he gathers a thousand men from the bazaar. When the Turanian army presses in, Lohrāsp dons his battle hauberk and strides from the place of worship to the field, roaring like a drunken elephant, a bull-headed mace in hand. With each charge he fells those sorcerous leaders, till many believe this champion can be none other than Esfandiyār. Yet in the midst of battle, age and the sun’s blaze overcome him; a Turanian arrow wounds him, and the godly man falls headlong. The diademed one sinks to the dust, riders throng about him; they tear his mail and armor, and his body is hacked to pieces. When they lift the helm from the king’s head, they behold a ruby-hued face and camphor-white hair, a heavenly countenance behind black iron, and marvel: how did this elder raise such a sword? Then they learn he is Lohrāsp, father of Goshtāsp, the king—one whose life was war and the field, who had turned his heart from seat and sweep. Now Goshtāsp’s back is bereft of him, and fear rises that he will shy from the royal diadem. The Turanian host then enters Balkh; plunder and slaughter make the world go dark. They set their course toward the fire-temple and burn its gilded palace and halls; they burn the Zend and Avesta and seize whatever is of greatest worth. Eighty Iranians, their tongues full of God’s remembrance, are slain before the sacred fire; the yellow flame dies in their blood. I know no recompense for them but Paradise.
