Rostam proudly defends his lineage against Esfandiar's insults. He extols the virtues of his father Zal and his grandfather Sam, the son of Nariman, tracing his ancestry back to the legendary King Garshasp. Rostam recounts the heroic deeds of his forefathers, such as Sam slaying a monstrous dragon and a sky-reaching demon. He also mentions his royal maternal lineage through Rudabeh, descendant of Zahhak. Rostam then lists his own unparalleled contributions to the Iranian crown: saving King Kavus from Hamavaran, conquering Mazandaran, defeating the White Div, and driving Afrasiyab out of Iran. He speaks with heavy heart of sacrificing his own son, Sohrab, for the sake of the King. claiming to have served as the world's champion for over five hundred years. Asserting that his efforts alone have secured the throne for the kings, he advises Esfandiar, who is young and inexperienced, to cease these boastful arguments and join him in drinking wine.
